Y&R’s Daniel Goddard sounds off on the 2012 Daytime Emmy Awards

Every year, The TV Watercooler wraps up the Daytime Emmy Awards, but this year, we thought we’d let The Young and the Restless’ Daniel Goddard (Cane) take control of the blog and let him wrap up the awards so that he can share his thoughts on the nominees and winners.

From Y&R, among the nominees we had Christel Khalil, who plays Lily, my character’s wife and soul mate, Genie Francis (Genevieve), who plays my mom and Elizabeth Hendrickson (Chloe), my character’s ex-wife…so in some bizarre way, they’re all connected to Cane. It’s very interesting. I was rooting for everyone. I love the show and am a big supporter of the show.

Heather Tom (Katie, The Bold and the Beautiful) won for outstanding lead actress where she beat out Debbi Morgan (for her role as Angie on All My Children), Crystal Chappell (for her role as Carly on Days of our Lives), Erika Slezak (for her role as Viki on One Life to Live) and Laura Wright (Carly, General Hospital).

The outstanding lead actor category is always very competitive; Anthony Geary (Luke, General Hospital) won, which is a record (his seventh). Anthony beat out Maurice Benard (Sonny on General Hospital), John McCook (Eric on The Bold and the Beautiful), Darnell Williams (Jesse on All My Children) and Robert Woods (Bo on One Life to Live).

For outstanding supporting actress, we had Melissa Claire Egan (for her turn as Annie on All My Children) – Missy’s on Y&R now (as Chelsea), Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth, General Hospital), Elizabeth Hendrickson (Chloe, The Young and the Restless) and Genie Francis (Genevieve, The Young and the Restless) and Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis, General Hospital) won but wasn’t there. Genie wasn’t there either; she was actually on a fishing trip in Alaska with her son and asked if I could receive the award on her behalf if she had won. I told her that I wasn’t going to be there either because my appearance on The Shopping Channel in Toronto and this event was scheduled before the Daytime Emmys were announced, so unfortunately we had a clash.

Everybody said Jonathan Jackson was a lock for supporting actor. He’s a good actor! General Hospital has solid actors. Jonathan’s pilot (Nashville) got picked up and that’s great. Genie Francis has a surprise 50th birthday party that I attended and Jonathan was there and we talked for a while. He’s very centered and down to earth, which you can see in his acting.

I voted on the outstanding supporting actress panel and watched the scenes between Jonathan Jackson and Julie Marie Berman (who plays Lulu on General Hospital) and I was very surprised that Julie wasn’t nominated because her reel was amazing. Genie and Liz were amazing as well. I am just blown away that Julie wasn’t nominated. Makes no sense to me!

The rest of the nominees for supporting actors included Matthew Ashford (Jack, Days of our Lives), Sean Blakemore (Shawn, General Hospital), Bradford Anderson (Spinelli, General Hospital) – I like Bradford, he’s a nice guy. Jason Thompson (Patrick, General Hospital) was also nominated – I actually read for Jason’s part and tested. I also tested for Austin Peck’s role on As The World Turns (where he played Brad Snyder), as well as the role Forbes March got on One Life to Live (Nash) and then finally read for Y&R. I think that everything happens for a reason. I didn’t want to move to New York back then because I would have had to move my family there.

For outstanding younger actress, Christel Khalil (Lily, The Young and the Restless) won out of Molly Burnett (Melanie, Days of our Lives), Shelley Hennig (Stephanie, Days of our Lives) and Jacqueline MacInnes Wood (Steffy, The Bold and the Beautiful). I am so stoked that Christel won! I remember when we were reading those scenes for which she was nominated and said, “She’s got the Emmy in the bag!” I’m really happy for her. It was her fourth nomination. She was also nominated in 2010 for the cancer storyline, which I thought she did wonderful in. I’m very happy for her. The scenes that Christel submitted where when my character had “died” and came back. Lily thought she was losing her mind. So, I supposed in some bizarre way, Cane’s “death” got Christel an Emmy! Amazing how kismet works.

Chandler Massey (Will, Days of our Lives) won outstanding younger actor. Usually Bryton is nominated from our show, but he wasn’t nominated this year. Chandler beat out Eddie Alderson (Matthew, One Life to Live), Chad Duell (Michael, General Hospital) and Nathan Parsons (Ethan, General Hospital).

Days of our Lives also won for writing while General Hospital won for directing team and best show.

It’s interesting that GH won. Do you think that the rumours of Katie Couric possibly getting the GH slot on ABC swayed the votes for GH because they wanted to make a statement about daytime soaps staying around and not being replaced by talk shows? I don’t watch GH, so I can’t be objective about whether or not it really was the outstanding drama series. I don’t watch Days of our Lives either, nor did I watch All My Children, so that question I just asked is difficult for me to answer. As someone who analyzes the data, it’s possible. It’s very possible. If you look at Anthony Geary and Jonathan Jackson winning, they’re playing father and son. You also have Nancy Lee Grahn winning and you had Maurice Benard nominated as well. It seems that they drove storylines so strongly that not only did it lead to their nominations and wins, but it also led to the show winning.

Soap News: Johnny staying at GH, Victor & Sharon get romantic on Y&R Plus Soap Memes

Christie Clark (Carrie) and Patrick Muldoon (Austin) taped their final scenes on Days of our Lives yesterday. What a waste of potential.

— Meanwhile, Brant Daugherty (Noel, Pretty Little Liars) has booked a guest arc on DAYS opposite Will and Sonny.

General Hospital’s executive producer Frank Valentini confirmed on Twitter that Brandon Barash (Johnny) isn’t exiting the soap.

— The wait is almost over…Kristina Wagner returns to GH tomorrow as Felicia.

Grayson McCouch (ex-Dusty, As the World Turns; ex-Morgan, Another World) has been cast as Dr. Don Masters in the new Nickelodeon soap, Hollywood Heights.

— As reported last week, Sean Kanan is headed back to The Bold and the Beautiful as Deacon Sharpe beginning May 24th. As per TV Guide, look for Deacon to be lured back to Los Angeles by Bill to help break up Liam and Hope. Looking forward to see if they ever address Little D/Little Eric’s (born in 1999) whereabouts. Especially since he was supposed to be older than Hope (who was born on screen in 2002) – significantly aging Amber (and by extension Rick), who schemed to get Hope’s man Liam last year. Of course, Brooke doesn’t look a day over 40.

— As sins from Phyllis’ (Michelle Stafford) past begin to be exposed next month on The Young and the Restless thanks to Ricky (Peter Porte), look for Aaron Lustig to return as Dr. Tim Reid. To refresh your memory, Dr. Reid was Phyllis’ court-appointed marriage counselor, whom she ended bedding and blackmailed with a sextape. The doctor later crossed over to The Bold and the Beautiful in 2001 and dealt with another redheaded vixen, Morgan DeWitt (Sarah Buxton). Michael Damian and Lauralee Bell are also back next month for this story as Danny and Cricket The Bug Christine.

— Most Y&R fans can agree that the show doesn’t always know what to do with their younger characters (see Noah Newman), but Blake Hood, who makes his debut as the aged Kyle Jenkins Abbott today (in Canada, tomorrow in the U.S.) has told Soaps in Depth that he’s here to stay, “I’ve been here every day this week. I’m busy here. There’s not much time for anything else.”

What’s coming up:

The Bold and the Beautiful: Hope continues to pop pills in Aspen because of the paparazzi. Taylor and Ridge take a stand against Brooke in regards to their children. Caroline is troubled by a family secret (lesbians, they’re getting lesbians). Jon Hensley (ex-Holden, ATWT) appears as a doctor on May 1 and 2.

Days of our Lives: John races to save Marlena. Kate and Sami battle it out after Kate catches Sami in bed with Lucas. Madison asks Justin to handle her divorce. Brady finds out that Nicole is pregnant. EJ finds out that he’s not Stefano’s son. An explosion rocks the safe house. Charles Shaughnessy returns as Shane Donovan next week.

General Hospital: Luke asks Anna for help. Sam and Carly confide in each other. Carly takes a peak at Kate’s medical file. Starr vows revenge against Sonny. Dante and McBain work together. Todd and Tea arrive to help Starr in the charges against her. Mac and Felicia find themselves in an awkward position.

The Young and the Restless: Kyle is hurt that Jack has moved on with Nikki. Cane is investigated by the SEC. Ashley finds out that Tucker has been hiding the truth about his past with Genevieve. Victor and Sharon become romantic. Yuck.

Kristen Wiig discusses leaving SNL with Alec Baldwin, True Blood Sneak Peek plus a look at tonight’s Gossip Girl and 2 Broke Girls

Kristen Wiig stopped by Alec Badlwin‘s podcast — you can listen to it here or read the transcript here. While she doesn’t flat out announce that she’s leaving Saturday Night Live when her contract expires at the end of this season, she did say this: “I will say that when I do leave it’s not because I’m sick of it and not because I see something better or anything like that. It’s just that it’s time. When I do leave, it will be the hardest thing.” Yes, Alec has a podcast. Amazing. Not only is Wiig rumoured to be leaving, but also Andy Samberg and Jason Sudeikis — all of which would be truly horrible. Anyway, the podcast is awesome as Kristen also discusses how she first arrived on SNL and then doing Bridesmaids.

— Sorry Degrassi fans, Shenae Grimes doesn’t speak with any of her former co-stars. She even says that that guy Drake, isn’t the Aubry she used to know. Check out our video interview with the 90210 star here.

General Hospital got the good sense of signing Finola Hughes (Anna) to a  contract. The actress returned to the soap earlier this year for Robin’s “death.” In other GH news, we’ve got another One Life to Live crossover happening with the stunning Florencia Lozano, who brings Tea Delgado over to Port Charles next month. The actress begins taping this week.

— E! has announced that Keeping Up with the Kardashians will kick off its 18-episode new season on May 20th.

The Vampire DiariesIan Somerhalder is building a zoo.

Desperate HousewivesEva Longoria confessed that the Nicollettte Sheridan/Marc Cherry trial is a “stain” on the shows legacy.

— There’s some push for a third X Files movie.

— Sure, there’s big buzz on Jessica Pare now, but our love for the Montreal actress goes far back…Hot Tub Time Machine, The Trotsky and even further, to Jack & Bobby. Check out our latest interview with the Mad Men star here.

— Here’s a very interesting sneak peek at True Blood scene where Sookie and Alcide discuss Russell Edgington being on the loose. But he’s dead…right?!

— My picks for tonight:

On Gossip Girl (8 p.m. on The CW and MuchMusic): Serena decides she is ready to relinquish the spotlight and sets out to make a reluctant Lola aka Real Charlie the next “It Girl” of the Upper East Side, starting with modelling at a Kiki de Montparnasse lingerie show. Meanwhile, Chuck reaches out to Blair for advice about his past. Diana Payne (Elizabeth Hurley) returns to The Spectator and starts a power struggle with Nate. Former One Life to Live star David Gregory will also appear. The Hollywood Reporter‘s got an exclusive sneak peek here.

On How I Met Your Mother (8 p.m. on CBS and Citytv): Ted, Marshall and Barney embark on another “trilogy tome,” where they get together every three years to watch the “Star Wars” trilogy and envision what their lives will be like in another three years. Meanwhile, Barney and Quinn (Becki Newton) move in together.

On 2 Broke Girls (8:30 p.m. on CBS and Citytv): Max convinces Caroline to take part in a clinical drug trial in an effort to raise money to help Caroline’s father.

Over in late night: Cobie Smulders and Ricky Gervais are on Letterman; James Van Der Beek is on Kimmel; Chris Klein is on Chelsea Lately.
